Walnut-Filled Roll


Walnut-filled roll is a favorite treat all over Hungary, especially during Christmas.

To make 1 roll, you need:  
1 tbsp. powdered sugar  
1 8-oz. chilled quick crescent roll dough  
1 egg yolk  
2 tbsp. water  
Walnut filling  
Filling can also be poppy seeds or an apple-walnut mixture.

Heat oven at 350°F.
Make walnut filling the leave aside to cool.
Lightly dust flour on a smooth, flat surface (such as a tabletop). Spread dough on surface and shape an oblong sheet of dough.
Put the walnut filling in dough.
Roll up dough from the longer rim of the oblong dough sheet.
Gently press edges to seal.
Grease a baking sheet and place rolls on it.
In a separate small bowl, mix egg yolk and water thoroughly.
Brush roll with egg yolk mixture and set aside for 10 minutes at room temperature.
Place baking sheet in oven and bake for around 10 to 15 minutes.
Quickly brown the roll by spreading a sheet of foil over it.
Return back to oven for extra 5 to 10 minutes.
When done, remove from oven, and allow to cool.
Transfer from the backing sheet onto a rack to finish cooling.
Slice rolls thinly, then garnish and sweeten with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Serve.
