Red Cabbage with Apples
In Austria, red cabbage is a most favorite dish included on lunch tables as a side dish. It adds a festive flavor to celebrations and holidays, such as Christmas. Households add apples to sweeten this already tasty dish.

2 tbsp. vegetable oil |

 |
1 1/2tbsp. flour |

 |
1 head red cabbage |
|
 |
1 small onion |
|
 |
4 to 6 whole cloves |
|
 |
1 1/2 tbsp. sugar |
|
 |
1 large green apple |
|
 |
2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar |

 |
Cut apple into quarters. Peel onion then cut into quarters. Chop cabbage into tiny pieces. |

In a large bowl, make a mixture of cabbage, onion, vinegar, 1 or 2 tbsp. sugar, cloves, apple, and oil. |

Cover the bottom of the bowl with enough amount of water. Then boil. |

Cook for 1 hour, or until soft and tender. |

Prevent the food from sticking to the bottom by adding boiling water if necessary. |

Before serving, sift flour and remaining sugar over the mixture. |
