In Greece, this sweet dish is a favorite for both children and adults. Served as a special dessert on New Year’ s Eve, this bread is baked with a coin somewhere inside it. Whoever gets the coin in his sliced portion is believed to have good luck in the coming year.

Preheat oven to 325ºF. |

Dissolve dry yeast with warm water and let stand. |

Melt butter with milk in a container over low heat. |
|
 |
Transfer mixture into a large bowl and add sugar. Allow to cool. |

Keep adding the eggs gradually, and beat mixture after every addition. |

Add yeast, orange peel, lemon peel, and salt. |

Add 3 c. of flour, one at a time, blending after every addition. |

Stir for 5 minutes. |

Dust a flat surface (such as a tabletop) and place dough on it. |

Knead for about 5 to 10 minutes or until smooth then transfer carefully onto a large greased bowl. |

Brush dough top with melted butter then wrap with a plastic cover. |

The dough takes 1 1/4 hours to rise in a warm spot. |

When doubled in bulk, transfer dough on a lightly floured tabletop. |

While flatten dough, hide a clean coin inside it. |
|
 |
If you with, put onto a cake model lined with a greased baking sheet then cover. |

Allow to rise for about 35 to 40 minutes. |

Mix egg yolk with 1 tbsp. water. |
|
 |
Brush dough with this mixture. |

 |
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. When golden, remove and serve warm. |
|
Before baking the loaf, arrange almonds on top forming the numerals of the coming year. |
