Holiday Fruit Bread


A common smell all through the streets of Austria during holidays is that of cookies, cakes, sweet breads, and other pastries. This dish can be served either as a dessert or a light snack.

To prepare 1 loaf of Holiday Fruit Bread, you need:  
1 c. chopped nuts  
1 c. chopped prunes  
1 c. diced dates or figs  
1 c. raisins  
3 c. flour  
2/3c. brown sugar  
3 tsp. baking powder  
2 tsp. baking soda  
1/4 tsp. salt  
2 c. buttermilk  
You can use walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, or another kind of nut.

Bring oven to 350°F heat.
Make a mixture of flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add buttermilk little by little until you get smooth dough you can easily work with.
Add nuts and fruits. Mix well.
Butter and dust flour on a 10-inch bread pan.
Put batter into the pan and bake for 38 to 45 minutes.
When done, remove from oven and allow to cool. Serve.
