Herring Paste on Bread


Herring Paste is a recipe with strong flavor served as a good appetizer on certain celebrations especially on Polish New Year’s Eve party.

To make 1 1/2 cups of Herring Paste on Bread, you need to prepare:  
fresh dill for decoration  
1 loaf rye or pumpernickel bread  
2 eggs  
1 8-oz. jar marinated herring fillets,  
drained  
1/4 c. softened butter (or margarine)

Put eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water.
Cook hard over medium heat.
When boiling, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Then drain.
Pour cold water over eggs to cool.
Remove egg's crust. Shred in half and separate into yolks and whites.
Use a blender to mash herring, hard-cooked egg yolks, and butter until mixture consistency is smooth.
Put herring into serving dish with a spoon.
Decorate herring with pieces of hard-cooked egg white and sprigs of dill.
Cut rye into thin slices and serve with herring paste.
